Appeal for Calm as Man Dies in Riot
Violence: The riots broke out in the Lozells area of Birmingham
Police and community leaders have appealed for calm after violent clashes in Birmingham left one man dead and about 12 people injured, including a police officer.
Riots broke out in the Lozells area of the city on Saturday night after residents attended an afternoon public meeting addressing concerns about an alleged sex attack on a 14-year-old girl.
Shops were hit and cars set on fire during the clash, and hundreds of police in riot gear were attacked with bricks and bottles.
Four people were stabbed during the violence, including a man in his 20s, who was taken to City Hospital but died from his injuries.
Detectives were called to reports of the stabbing at 7.15pm and another man was stabbed in the same incident, West Midlands Police said.
Two hours later, a man was stabbed at the Farcroft Hotel in Rookery Road, and 20 minutes later reports came in of a man being shot and another man being stabbed at the Uplands pub in Oxhill Road.
Shortly after 10pm, police were told one of their own officers had been shot in the thigh by a ball bearing gun.
The man shot in the pub did not appear to have life threatening injuries, a spokesman for the force said.
Assistant Chief Constable David Shaw said the violence was "entirely unacceptable".
Tensions have been simmering for the past few days over the alleged attack on a teenage girl. Police have urged the victim of the alleged rape to come forward after three people were arrested in the Perry Barr area of Birmingham.
